Meta–India Child Safety Reporting [Prelims Bits]

Context: Meta will directly report Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) cases to India’s cybercrime authorities, in addition to the U.S.-based National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC).

• Meta platforms: Instagram and Facebook.
• Indian reporting channel: Cybercrime portal managed by the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
• Earlier mechanism: Meta and other U.S.-based technology companies shared CSAM reports through NCMEC, following a 2019 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) and NCMEC.
• Cyber Tip-line reports: More than 69.05 lakh reports had been shared with concerned States/Union Territories as of 31 March 2024.
• NCPCR:National Commission for Protection of Child Rights has initiated an investigation into allegations concerning CSAM appearing in advertisements on Meta platforms.
• I4C: An initiative of the Ministry of Home Affairs aimed at tackling cybercrime through coordination among law-enforcement agencies, cybercrime reporting and investigation mechanisms.
• NCMEC: A U.S. nonprofit organisation that operates the CyberTipline, receiving reports of suspected online child exploitation and sharing them with relevant law-enforcement authorities
